ROBOT WARS: ARENAS OF DESTRUCTION (2001) REVIEW
Playstation 2 version reviewed.
Robot Wars: Arenas of Destruction is an action game published by BBC Multimedia and developed by Gamezlab for the Playstation 2 and PC.
GAMEPLAY
It can be quite fun at times, the variety of maps adds a few different ways to approach the game.
There is a certain robot in the game that can't get immobilsesd because the game doesn't realise it can no longer partake, meaning if you can't shove it out the map then it will survive to the end, sometimes even leading to it beating you on the judges decision, the whole judging system in the game is awful too.
Despite bossing a whole fight your robot can randomly cut out and make you lose the tie. Similar things can happen with the judges, I remember dominated a certain robot where
Some robots are clearly inferior, there isn't really any reason to pick anything other than one with a flipper.
GRAPHICS
Looks alright. The licensed robots look quite nice.
SOUND
I really liked the guitar music that plays at most of the menus, but after hearing it for the umpteenth time it began to get on your nerves.
The crowd just repeat the same noises over and over again, as in, pretty much the exact same noise. Jonathon Pearce is amazing as the commentator on the show, but in this game you just hear the same sentences being spewed out incoherently and it just gets annoying.
VALUE FOR MONEY
It's probably worth getting on sale if you like Robot Wars, since it does have a decent amount of content for fans.
OVERALL
While you may find some enjoyment of the game with its Robot Wars licence, this game would not be worth playing without it. Shoddy controls, annoying sound design and being blatantly unfair at times really brings the game down.
