AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER (2006) REVIEW

PS2 version reviewed.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is an action adventure game published and developed by THQ for the Playstation 2, PSP, Xbox, Gamecube, Wii, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS and PC.

GAMEPLAY
The bosses are okay and go into the 3rd person mode, which is where I think this franchise really has potential. The problem with them, at least later on in the game though, is that Aang gets so overpowered that they become a push over, I beat the final boss in just a few minutes because it became so easy with the right moves.

The game does have some depth to it though, different armours, trinkets and the different bending styles to make the different characters each have advantages (Even if Aang does become the best character to the point of not needing anyone else in the party).

The Momo food finding parts are awfully boring. You just run around the map and find food with no real hints, even if sometimes the food you're looking for it lying around anyway...

My main complaint with the gameplay really is just the fact that the majority of the game takes place in a more top down kind of way than 3rd person. Imagine the potential that the Avatar license has in the form of a third person platformer or action adventure style game, Aang is an airbender after all.

STORY
It's actually set sometime between the first and second seasons of the TV show. It's alright, not to the standard of the TV show of course, but it's good enough to keep the game playable.

GRAPHICS
Looks alright, although I can't be the only one who thought it looked like Aang had a moustache in some cutscenes right?

SOUND
There isn't much music for some reason and you'll often just be walking around to ambient noises for some reason. The music that is in the game isn't from the TV show and is rather forgettable.

VALUE FOR MONEY
Probably around 6 hours long, maybe you'd push a bit above 7 if you wanted to get to 100%.

OVERALL
Just imagine the potential this license has in the form of a video game. Imagine a game like Okami with an Avatar twist and tell me how it couldn't be one of the best things ever. If you're a big fan of the TV show then this game might be worth a look at, but be aware that there are far better games out there.
